Charles and Arthur Cogswell bought out the E. E. Ellis store in Etna, New York when Ellis went bankrupt in 1891, running the store thereafter as the Cogswell Brothers General Store. In 1928, agents of Henry Ford acquired old stock from the Etna store to help furnish the general store which Ford relocated to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan from Waterford, Michigan. Arthur Cogswell was born on October 29, 1930, in Jacksonville, Florida. He received a B.A. in drama from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 and B.Arch. from North Carolina State College in 1959. He began his architecture practice in 1962, and in 1967 formed a partnership with Werner Hausler.
