Ruth Gail McComas was born in New York and raised in Tampa Florida where she attended business college after high school graduation. She was the widow of Air Force fighter-ace, Edward O. McComas. In 1955, she was selected for the position of the first "Cadet Wing Hostess" at the United States Air Force Academy.
