Ruth Gail McComas was born in New York and raised in Tampa Florida where she attended business college after high school graduation. She was the widow of Air Force fighter-ace, Edward O. McComas. In 1955, she was selected for the position of the first "Cadet Wing Hostess" at the United States Air Force Academy. She became known as "Mrs. Mac" to the cadets who followed her advice in matters of military and social protocol. Mrs. McComas also helped the cadets plan their dances and arranged for women from nearby colleges to attend cadet social functions. She continued in this position until her retirement in 1977. Gail McComas died of a heart attack at her home in Colorado Springs in 1988.
