Typescript photocopy of the ship's log kept on the U.S. Revenue Brig Lawrence under captains Alexander V. Fraser and Douglas Ottinger. Includes entries made by Captain Alexander V. Fraser and lieutenants John Carson and William B. Richmond in January and February 1851 which mainly recount travels among the Channel Islands, particularly Catalina. Incidents reported include the punishment of crewman William Graham for biting off a piece of another crewman's nose. The final few pages recount the Lawrence's running aground in November 1851 and a letter requesting the use of the Argus, signed by Captain Douglas Ottinger.

The revenue cutter Cornelius W. Lawrence first sailed from Virginia to California via Cape Horn and Hawaii in October 1848, arriving in San Francisco in October 1849. From 1850 the ship patrolled the California coastline for smuggling activity. Douglas Ottinger, best known for putting down a mutiny on the Challenge, became captain of the Lawrence in June 1851. On November 25, 1851, rough seas caused the Lawrence to strike ground at Point Lobos, and the wreck was sold at auction in 1852. ...
