Fraser, Alexander V. (Alexander Vaughan), 1916-
Variant namesThe revenue cutter Cornelius W. Lawrence first sailed from Virginia to California via Cape Horn and Hawaii in October 1848, arriving in San Francisco in October 1849. From 1850 the ship patrolled the California coastline for smuggling activity. Douglas Ottinger, best known for putting down a mutiny on the Challenge, became captain of the Lawrence in June 1851. On November 25, 1851, rough seas caused the Lawrence to strike ground at Point Lobos, and the wreck was sold at auction in 1852.
