Thornburgh's press officers and staff throughout his career frequently used audio tapes as an appropriate way to document informal remarks and press conferences in particular, but the collection also includes tapes of more formal ceremonies and events. The Thornburgh collection includes more than 500 such tapes. In particular, 9 hours from 31 items have been digitized and are available online. The tapes are arranged in eight sections: I. Early Legal Career, 1970s; II. Campaign for Governor of Pennsylvania, 1978; III. Re-election Campaign for Governor of Pennsylvania, 1982; IV. Governor of Pennsylvania, 1979-1987; V. Three Mile Island (TMI), 1979-1999; VI. Attorney-General of the United States, 1988-1991; VII. Campaign for United States Senate, 1991; VIII. Under-Secretary-General, United Nations, 1993.
