Halbert E. Paine papers, 1861-1915 (bulk 1861-1863).

Microfilm contents consist of one order book, one record book, volumes 1 and 2 of Paine's MANUSCRIPTA MINORA, a collection of loose letters and photographs, and miscellaneous narratives and diary notes. The order book is of General Thomas Williams and General Halbert E. Paine. The record book contains miscellaneous records such as letters, orders, telegrams, proclations, etc. MANUSCRIPTA MINORA contains the memoirs of Paine's experiences during the Civil War. Letters are mostly from Paine to his wife, daughter, mother and father. Photographs are of Union soldiers in Illinois and of General Paine in Carrollton, La. Included is the narrative "The Experiences of a Child in the Civil War" by Eliza P. Ladd.

Halbert Eleazer Paine was born in Chardon, Ohio, on 4 February 1826. On 10 September 1850 he married Eliza Leaworthy Brigham of Windham, Ohio. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Brevet Major General in recognition for gallantry on several occasions, particularly for the attack on Port Hudson, Louisiana.
