Paine, Halbert E.

Halbert Eleazer Paine was born in Chardon, Ohio, on 4 February 1826. On 10 September 1850 he married Eliza Leaworthy Brigham of Windham, Ohio. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Brevet Major General in recognition for gallantry on several occasions, particularly for the attack on Port Hudson, Louisiana. Halbert was a U.S. Representative from Milwaukee between 1865 and 1871, serving as Chairman of the Committee on the Militia and Chairman of the Committee on Elections. He later took up the practice of law, eventually becoming a Justice of the Peace in Georgetown, D.C. He died in Washington, 14 April 1905.
