In 1847, Yale established the Department of Philosophy and Arts, which offered courses in philosophy, the arts, and the sciences. Watson Fredericks Kinney was born on December 25, 1906, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, the son of James Montrose Kinney and Helen Watson Fredericks Kinney. He attended Pelham High School and Phillips-Andover. After graduation from the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University in 1929, Kinney joined the Detroit Edison Company as an engineer in the production department. He was the owner of the Watson F.
