Included is an excerpt from Dr. Moore's View of society and manners in France, Switzerland, and Germany; an account of a dream; military anecdotes; lengthy excerpts from Pratt's Gleanings; introductory addresses (verse), in English and Latin, to speeches in Lincoln School, 1797-1816; assorted verse excerpted from English periodicals; original verse, in English and Latin; a collection of epigrams in Latin copied from a manuscript at Westminster; and a Latin version of the ancient ballad of Chevy Chase. The title page contains a watercolor vignette signed "E.C."

Samuel Jackson Pratt abandoned his clerical career to become successively an actor, a bookseller, a dramatist, and finally a prolific poet and novelist whose best-known productions were the poem Sympathy and a translation of The Sorrows of Werther. The collection also contains "The Linnets," a sentimental fable by Pratt, and a copy of a poem, "On Mrs. Provis leaving Bath the day after Keppel's Arrival." John Carter (1762-1829), clergyman, classical scholar, and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was headmaster of Lincoln Grammar School from 1792 to 1820. He married Ellen Carter around 1787.
