Account book for George, 1st Marquis Townshend, 1765 Sept. 20-1772 April 17.

Detailed accounts, in a single hand (John Lees), of the income and expenses incurred by George Townshend during Townshend's tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland as well as the year precending his years in Ireland. The manuscript records expenses related to: servants wages and gifts; dining and entertaining; maintenance of a stable of horses; costs of going on hunts, including the food served to servants and dogs; gambling debts; alms given to individuals as well as charities; bills paid to Lady Townshend in London for such items as toys which she bought "for the children"; and payments to tradesmen and servants. Detailed accounts are kept for all fees incurred by Lord and Lady Townshend for travel during this period, to and from Ireland, as well as the costs for their servants. The volume also records various expenses for Lady Townshend and in September 1770 a detailed accounting of the cost of her care during her final illness in Ireland, and after her death the cost of transporting her back to England, and her burial at Raynham, Norfolk.

Sir John Lees was the secretary-agent for George, 1st Marquis Townshend, politician and caricaturist, later Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (19 August 1767-1772). Lees later became Secretary to the Post Office in Dublin, and was created a baronet on June 21, 1804.
