William Herschel's extensive notes, taken at Professor William Empson's lectures given between 1851 and 1852 at the East India Company's college at Haileybury, where Empson was professor of general polity and the laws of England. William Herschel (1833-1917) was educated at Clapham Grammar School and the East India Company's college at Haileybury. His later career took him to India, where, as a magistrate in Hooghly, he instituted the first known system of fingerprinting in 1877-8.
