Herschel, William James
Variant namesWilliam Herschel (1833-1917) was educated at Clapham Grammar School and the East India Company's college at Haileybury. His later career took him to India, where, as a magistrate in Hooghly, he instituted the first known system of fingerprinting in 1877-8.
