Sir Francis Drake documents, 1858-1860.

Five bound volumes of manuscript transcriptions and notes concerning Sir Francis Drake. A manuscript note on the flyleaf of each volume attributes the volumes to "Saml. G. Drake" and notes "MSS made in England in the years 1858-59, 1860." A manuscript note on the inside front cover of the first volume states "Bound by Capt. John G. Roberts, Sept. 1870." Volumes II, III, and IV bear New Hampshire Historical Society bookplates with an inscription recording the presentation of the volumes by Charles Kendall Drake. Each volume contains a manuscript table of contents, listing transcribed documents.

Samuel Gardner Drake, antiquarian and author. Drake was born to Simeon and Love Muchmore (Tucke) Drake in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, on October 11, 1798. After teaching for several years in New Hampshire and New Jersey, Drake established a book auction business in 1828.
