Holograph journal of Greig's experiences as a member of the second voyage of the missionary ship H.M.S. Duff. The opening portion of the diary contains reports on sermons, prayers and the weekly planning meetings held by the mission members. Greig gives a complete list of their prospective assignments, as well as many strongly worded observations concerning the often quarrelsome relations among the passengers. He describes in detail their 1799 capture by and captivity on the French privateer Buonaparte and their subsequent detention in the port city of Montevideo. The diary records his impressions of Montevideo; the authority of the Roman Catholic priests over the Spanish and Indian citizens; and the further deterioration of "brotherhood" among the missionaries during their deliberations about continuing the voyage. Although they determined to continue, they were quickly recaptured, this time by a Portuguese fleet, and Greig recounts their "miserable" treatment by these captors during their voyage to Lisbon, including confiscation of much personal property and the temporary separation of the missionaries and their wives. He also harshly criticizes the "unChristian" behavior of William Gregory and others in this second captivity, and praises the efforts of the British Consul at Lisbon to secure safe passage home for all the Duff's passengers.

Reverend George Greig was an ordained minister and member of the London Missionary Society who joined the second voyage of the missionary ship H.M.S. Duff, which sailed for Tahiti in June of 1798. The Duff and its passengers never reached the Pacific, as it was captured first by French privateers and then by the Portuguese fleet.
