Journey in Italy : in the months of March, April, May, June, July and August 1832....part I from March the 21st to May the 29th, 1832 Mar-May.

First volume of a holograph journal of a tour of the major cities of Italy. The author, a graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge describes travel arrangements, tourist sights, and works of art in most of the cities and towns he encounters. While in Venice, for example, he quotes Byron and discusses the Inquisition, tours of glass and gold chain factories, and the condition of the harbor. His time in Florence was spent primarily in admiring works of art, in particular sculptures by Canova and Michelangelo. On arriving in Rome, the author and his friends, the Walter Graingers, called on ambassadors; greeted people "known to me from Cambridge days," including Gerald Wellesley; and toured the sights, particularly Roman ruins and private "picture collections." The author attended Easter Week ceremonies at the Sistine Chapel, became a member of "Princess Galitzin's" social circle, and met "Prince Max." The author, with the Graingers, accompanied the princess to Naples at the end of April. Topics include the bay of Naples and the Chiaia; the liquefaction of the blood of St. Januarius and popular Catholicism in general; dinners, theatrical performances, and trips to Ischia, Capri and Pompeii. The author describes the moonlight tour of Pompeii in some detail, including his reaction to the famed pornographic wall-paintings. (An annotation refers to an article in the January 1835 New Monthly Review, "Pompeii by Torchlight," as being by the diary author.). Several rough pencil drawings of figures, seating plans for dinners, and costume.
