[Commonplace book], 1823-1831.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of notes taken from travel books read shortly after their publication; many entries record the date of reading. Works quoted include Stendhal's Rome, Naples, et Florence; Morris Birkbeck's Notes in a journey through France; and London and Paris letters between the M. de Vermont and Sir Charles Darnley. Other texts from which the compiler copied notes include Peter Hawker's Instructions to young sportsmen in all that relates to shooting; Sir Walter Scott's Life of Napoleon; and Henry G. Ward's Mexico in 1827; Charles Latrobe's The Alpenstock, on Switzerland; William Moorsom's Letters from Nova Scotia; and John Murray's A year in Spain by a young American. From Orlando Roberts' Central America, the compiler notes the practice of barbecuing meat and the excellent quality of vanilla. The collection also includes notes on Brazil; a list of persons who have ascended Mont Blanc; and a few poems.
