Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 70 entries, many of them humorous, concerning both local and more famous personages. One anecdote dated 1842 describes an elderly neighbor's dream of heaven, with the note "I have written the above exactly as my Brother told it me-having read over the memorandum to him-whence this is copied." Other vignettes concern George Nicol, bookseller to King George III, Samuel Johnson, and David Hume; longer anecdotes include "Don Miguel's Fleet off Madeira...from my journal kept from day to day beginning August 15th 1828"; an anecdote of the misfortunes of the Duke of Luxembourg during the French Revolution; and an account of "The Battle of the Maypole" at Fiddleford and Okeford, Dorset in 1781, "written from Mr. Tiggard Furnell's dictation. About two years before his death - which took place on Oct 31. 1837." The volume also contains several verses, including The Manse by William Knox, Lines by Jane Campbell, "Eleven years of age"; and Madeira Fashionables, dated "1826 or 1827."
