[Diary], 1699 Nov 16 - 1714 Aug 4.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a political diary which records primarily naval and military activities in Great Britain and Europe. Entries include Sir George Rooke's sailing for Holland to join a Dutch squadron of men-of-war to go to the Baltic; news of the march of the King of Sweden's army in Poland; and the invasion of the Hague by the King of Spain. The diary also mentions the movements of Queen Anne and her court; ships sailing to and from the East Indies; Parliamentary acts; and promotions and appointments, such as that of George Rooke to Vice Admiral; Prince George of Denmark to Lord High Admiral; and George Compton, Earl of Northampton to privy counselor. The manuscript concludes with the coronation of King George I.

George I was the first Hanover king of England, claiming the throne through his mother, Sophia, great granddaughter of King James I. His succession was orchestrated to ensure a Protestant ruler.
