Account and memorandum book, 1812-1876 (bulk 1812-1828).

Ledger serving as John Johnston's account book and memorandum book while Indian agent in Western Ohio. Contains fair copies of letters to the Secretary of War and Superintendent of Indian Trade concerning Indians in his agency, particularly their allegiance during the War of 1812, and the necessity of attending to their needs after the end of the war. The accounts provide additional information on the daily operation of the agency, with lists of annuities, reimbursements, and store inventories. The ledger also includes accounts that Johnson kept as a distributor of provisions in Western Ohio during the War of 1812, and include his accounts with his bank, the Miami Exporting Company, a list of the number of white male inhabitants over the age of 21 in Ohio in 1816, a list of the number and location of Indians in Ohio in 1818, receipts made out to Johnston, as well as a letter from Johnston to his daughter Elizabeth dated June 9, 1856 describing the terms of his will.

Johnston was born in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia in 1786. In 1802 he was appointed Indian factor in Fort Wayne, Ind. and apparently took over the position of Indian agent there in 1809. In 1811 he was transferred to Piqua, Ohio, where he was Indian agent for the next 20 years. From the description of Account book, 1802-1811. (Indiana Historical Society Library).
