Contract between Leonard W. Colby and the Shawnee tribe of Indians in the Cherokee Nation and related documents, 1893 Oct 16-17.

Original and carbon copy of a typed contract between Leonard W. Colby and the Shawnee tribe of Indians in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, designating Colby as legal counsel for the tribe, and supporting documents. The contract stipulates that Colby will represent the tribe in the "Executive Departments of the Government at Washington, D.C., the Congress of the United States, the Court of Claims ... the Supreme Court ... and important meetings of the Council of the said Shawnee tribe." In addition, Colby agrees to act as attorney and counsellor to former Principal Chief Johnson Blackfeather in his suits against the United States. Both copies of the contract are signed by Charles Bluejacket, President and Principal Chief, Cyrus C. Cornatzer, Second Chief, five Councilmen, and a Secretary. Accompanying each copy of the contract are five supporting documents including the Shawnee tribe resolution authorizing the hiring of Colby, and statements signed by G. Campbell, county judge of the Labette County, Kansas, D. H. Martin, Labette county clerk, Dew M. Wisdom, Indian agent, and J. H. Bailey, interpreter.

Leonard Colby practiced law in Beatrice, Nebraska. In 1891 he was appointed assistant attorney general of the United States. During the 1890s Colby was employed as an attorney in Washington, D.C., representing the Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole tribes. Although the Treaty of Hopewell (1785) defined the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and the U.S., Congress during the Confederation period was unable to keep white squatters off Cherokee lands.
