Robert A. Marmion diaries and papers relating to his service in the United States Navy, 1869-1874 (bulk 1869-1871).

Two holograph manuscript diaries and other papers relating to Marmion's work as an assistant surgeon in the United States Navy. In his diary dated April 8, 1869-November 28, 1870, Marmion discusses his assignment to the Pacific Fleet, arrival at Mare Island, California, and passage to Sitka, Alaska Territory, in September, 1869, aboard the U.S.S. Cyane. In entries for January-February, followed by intermittent entries for June and November, he describes living conditions and the social life of officers at Sitka. Entries are followed by accounts and notes written by members of Marmion's family, ca. 1875-ca. 1885. The second diary, September 1, 1870-August 10, 1871, titled "Journal of Daily Practice," contains daily entries listing names and illnesses of crew members Marmion treated as assistant surgeon on the Cyane. The Cyane remained at Sitka during September-December, 1870, arrived at Acapulco and Salina Cruz, Mexico, in February, 1871, and returned to San Francisco and Mare Island in June-July. Related papers, 1869-1874 and n.d., include letters, documents regarding appointment of ship's apothecaries, quarterly sick reports, and certificates of physical examination and hospital tickets issued for individual crew members, written by Marmion, with some documents on printed forms completed in manuscript. Most papers date from his service on the Cyane, 1869-1871. Also present are a few papers relating to his later career, 1872 and 1874, and a personal letter written to an unidentifed recipient while serving on the ship Alaska in the Mediterranean Sea, 1874 Oct 21.
