J. C. Ives letters to Jérôme Napoléon Bonaparte and Susan May Williams Bonaparte, 1853 Apr-Oct.

Three letters written at the end of J. C. Ives' first Army assignment and the beginning of his second, as assistant to A. W. Whipple in the Pacific Railway survey. The last and longest letter is dated Oct. 13, 1853 and is addressed to Mrs. Bonaparte. In it, Ives describes his journey to Albuquerque from Fort Inge in Texas, uneventful except for an attack of fever. He relates the warnings of friends about making the crossing to California in winter, describes his preparations for the arrival of Whipple, refers to his fellow officers, and states his belief that Jerome will not leave the United States to fight in France. With two other letters addressed to Mr. Bonaparte, the first dated April 11, 1853, while Ives was working in Washington, referring to young Jérôme Bonaparte's attempt to obtain a transfer; the second, dated May 28, 1853, "Ohio River, between Wheeling & Louisville" informs Mr. Bonaparte of his plans to catch the mail to El Paso and see young Jérôme in Texas at Fort Inge on the way.
