The journal describes the voyage of the United States Exploring Expedition around South America, throughout the Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, Australia, the south sea islands, and the Northwest Coast of America. Silas Holmes noted the countries visited, as well as the customs of the natives, particularly the Polynesians.
