John Mitchell was born in 1794 and graduated from Yale College in 1821. He was editor of the Christian Spectator, a religious monthly published in New Haven from 1824-1829. In 1830 Mitchell was ordained as the first pastor of the First Congregational Church in Fair Haven and remained there until 1836.
