Mitchell family.

John Mitchell was born in 1794 and graduated from Yale College in 1821. He was editor of the Christian Spectator, a religious monthly published in New Haven from 1824-1829. In 1830 Mitchell was ordained as the first pastor of the First Congregational Church in Fair Haven and remained there until 1836. From 1836-1942 he was pastor of the Edwards Congregational Church in Northampton, Massachusetts. After resigning due to failing health, Mitchell traveled abroad and then settled in Stratford, Connecticut, where he became a writer. He died in 1870.
