Harold Edward Woodsum, Jr. was born in Portland, Maine in 1931. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (1953) and a Bachelor of Laws (1958) from Yale University. He was awarded an honorary Master of Arts from Yale in 1979. Woodsum later attended Westbrook College and earned a Doctor of Laws in 1991. He was a co-founder and partner in the law firm of Drummond, Woodsum, Plimpton & McMahon from 1965 to 1988. He served as director of athletics of Yale University from 1988 to 1994.
