Harold Edward Woodsum, Jr. was born in Portland, Maine in 1931. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (1953) and a Bachelor of Laws (1958) from Yale University. He was awarded an honorary Master of Arts from Yale in 1979. Woodsum later attended Westbrook College and earned a Doctor of Laws in 1991. He was a co-founder and partner in the law firm of Drummond, Woodsum, Plimpton & McMahon from 1965 to 1988. He served as director of athletics of Yale University from 1988 to 1994. Woodsum was a trustee of both Yale University and Westbrook College. Woodsum was elected to the board of directors of the National Audubon Society in 1981 and retained his seat until 1993. He served as chairman of the board from 1988 to 1993.
