Jarvis family papers, 1917-1981.

Papers of Annie Jarvis Howell include a ms. relating to her father; a history of the Jarvis family; a typed letter giving information on teachers' salaries during the years she taught school (ca. 1918-1962); and a letter (1981) giving the history of a wedding dress she donated to the Jefferson County Historical Society. Papers of Norman Donald Jarvis include a personal logbook (1917-1919) relating to his World War I service as a pharmacist's mate with the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps; and a scrapbook relating to his work with the Dept. of the Interior for which he traveled widely in supervising the construction and improvement of American foreign fisheries. He made four trips to Peru, where he helped that country's government establish its present fishery facilities and made frequent journeys to other European countries. He lived in Port Townsend, Wash., before World War I and attended the First United Presbyterian Church. He also belonged to the Boy Scouts in the area. The scrapbook contains memorabilia and photographs from his time in Port Townsend as well as correspondence and photographs relating to his time in Peru.

The Alaska Public Works Program was authorized during the 81st Congress through the Alaska Public Works Act, Public Law 264. The Act authorized the General Services Administration to construct public works in Alaska, at a total cost of $70 million, then to sell them to the Territory of Alaska or other public bodies in Alaska at a purchase price that would recover approximately 50% of the total estimated cost.
