The Iowa Centennial Committee was informally convened in 1943 as the Iowa Statehood Centennial Commission, chaired by State Historical Society of Iowa director Ora Williams. Upon the recommendation of the Commission the legislature formalized the committee to coordinate events to celebrate Iowa's statehood centennial. William Lytle Carpenter served one term as mayor of Des Moines beginning in 1888. He also served as secretary of the Farmers' Protective Association which was formed in 1881 chiefly for the purpose of fighting a barbed wire monopoly by Washburn & Moen Company. The Association contracted with a "free factory" in Des Moines to manufacture barbed wire independently and sell its product to the group's members.
