The Iowa Centennial Committee was informally convened in 1943 as the Iowa Statehood Centennial Commission, chaired by State Historical Society of Iowa director Ora Williams. Upon the recommendation of the Commission the legislature formalized the committee to coordinate events to celebrate Iowa's statehood centennial. The Iowa Centennial Committee completed its work in 1947, summarizing its activities in a report to Governor Robert Blue. In 1948 the Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation was incorporated to manage the proceeds from the sales of the Iowa centennial half-dollar. These proceeds were to be used to support and recognize the work of outstanding Iowans.
