Francis Joseph Thompson was born on December 18, 1859 in Lancashire, England, to Charles and Mary Turner Morton Thompson. Thompson's sisters Mary (later Sister Mary Austin) and Margaret were born in 1861 and 1863, respectively. After Mary Turner’s death, Charles Thompson married Anne Richardson and had one more son, Norbert. Hartmann was born in Hungary, but emigrated as a child to the United States. He began a career as a concert violinist while still a child in 1887. During his career he was very active in the promotion of new music and so developed a wide correspondence with many important composers.
