Iowa's 7th governor. During the Civil War he served the 21st Iowa Infantry as a corporal. After the war he returned to McGregor, Iowa where he chosen to be the president of the First National Bank. Samuel Merrill was Iowa's 7th governor (1868-1872). His brother, Jeremiah Hill Merrill, was a prominent banker and businessman, partnering with Samuel at the First National Bank of McGregor.
