Leroy Donald was born August 23, 1935, in New Albany, Mississippi. He graduated from high school in El Dorado, Arkansas, and worked as a newspaper reporter while studying to be a teacher. He came to work for the Arkansas Gazette in 1959 and served for a time as state editor, eventually focusing on business reporting.
