Contains 55 documents concerning the Marchioness' dealings with the French crown and its agents between 1559 and 1562, comprising of retained copies of letters and petitions sent by her or in her name and of letters received by her. Including letters received from: Catherine de Medici, Francis II of France, Charles IX of France, Montmorency, Margaret of France and Savoy, Antoine de Bourbon, King of Navarre, Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine, Elizabeth of France and others. And including letters sent to: Catherine de Medici, Francis II of France and others. The bulk of the materials deal with the affairs of the garrison town of Calusio or Caluso north of Turin, Italy, and provides a detailed picture of life in the province after the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559; complaints by the locals about the behavior of the French troops; complaints by Brissac about thefts of supplies and harassment by the townspeople; of non-payment of levies to the French; and similar problems.

Catherine de Medicis was born in Florence, Italy, as Caterina Maria Romola di Lorenzo de' Medici, the daughter of Lorenzo II de' Medici, Duke of Urbino, and Madeleine de la Tour d'Auvergne, countess of Boulogne.
