W.H. Carroll photographs, 1936-1941.

The W.H. Carroll Photographs includes black and white pictures of various sizes. The bulk of the photographs are from 1938-1940 and includes pictures of mining work in Ester and Cripple Creek, hydraulic mining, pictures of the Cripple Creek dragline and dredges such as the Fairbanks Exploration Company Dredge, the Chatanika Dredge and Gold Dredge number 10. The Carroll Collection also has pictures of life at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (then the University of Alaska) and also photographs and memorabilia of the 1939 Fairbanks Ice Carnival and Dog Derby. In addition, this collection has pictures of the Nenana Ice Classic Tripod, a fish wheel, pictures of the Circle Hot Springs Hotel, and General Store and Trading Post, totem poles. This collection includes pictures of Howard Hughes when he visited Fairbanks in 1939 in his airplane. Additionally, many of the mining and Alaska travel photographs are located in two notebooks that had notes and observations by Carroll, and served as photo albums.

W.H. (Bill) Carroll was born in 1913 and arrived in Alaska in 1936. Carroll attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks (then just called the University of Alaska) in 1938 and studied Mining Engineering. Bill Carroll was in the Gulf of Alaska when the bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred and the war changed Carroll's plans, he continued on with his degree after the war at the Texas College of Mines, El Paso (now the University of Texas, El Paso).
