Scope and Content of the Collection The Carlisle Barracks Collection is a collection created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute regarding the history and activities of Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, from its beginning to the present, including the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, the Medical Field Service School, and the U.S. Army War College. The bulk of the material dates from 1920-1970, primarily relating to the Medical Field Service School and U.S. Army War College non-academic activities.

The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the brainchild of a young lieutenant of the 10th United States (U.S.) Cavalry, Richard Henry Pratt. Lieutenant Pratt had great sympathy for the misery of the Indian, even while he was engaged in subduing the hostile tribes of the West. The United States (U.S.) Army Military History Research Collection (MHRC) was begun at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, in 1967. Its mission was the "collection, preservation and utilization of materials relating to the history and traditions of the U.S. Army."
