Melvin Clarke George (1849-1933) was born in Ohio and came to Oregon with his parents in 1851. He was educated at Santiam Academy and Willamette University. He was an Oregon state senator, 1876-1880, and U.S. Representative, 1880-1884 (Republican), and later practiced law in Portland. Henry Villard was a journalist, railway promoter, and financier. Born in Bavaria, he came to the United States in 1853. He worked as a journalist for a variety of newspapers and was a Civil War correspondent for the New York Herald and New York Tribune . In 1873 Villard became a representative for a group of German bondholders of the Oregon and California Railroad, and his career as a railroad promoter in the Northwest was launched. Edward R. Geary, pioneer missionary and educator, was born in Boonsboro, Maryland on April 30, 1811. He arrived in Oregon in 1851 as a Presbyterian missionary, preaching at Brownsville, Pleasant Grove and Albany, before settling in Eugene in 1875. In 1866, Geary co-founded Albany College, and in 1876 became a regent of the University of Oregon. He served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon and Washington Territory from1859-1861.
