James Blakely papers [manuscript], 1867-1912.

Papers of James Blakely, an early settler of Brownsville, Oregon. Includes the account book of his general mercantile store in Brownsville, Or., 1867 May to 1867 Nov., listing the expenses of the store and purchases of customers; picture postcards of Blakely in 1911 and of Eliza Spalding Warren with Martha Spalding Wrigle; and documents from his 100th birthday celebration in 1912 in Portland, Or., including congratulatory correspondence, the program from Oregon Pioneer Association celebration in his honor, and photocopies of newspaper clippings.

Captain Blakely was born in Lynes County, Tennessee, November 26, 1812, and received his education there. In, 1846, and started for Oregon and arrived at present day Brownsville October 9 of that year. With his uncle, Hugh L. Brown, after whom Brownsville later was named, he took up a donation claim and started Brownsville in 1855.
