Blakely, James, 1812-1913

Captain Blakely was born in Lynes County, Tennessee, November 26, 1812, and received his education there. In, 1846, and started for Oregon and arrived at present day Brownsville October 9 of that year. With his uncle, Hugh L. Brown, after whom Brownsville later was named, he took up a donation claim and started Brownsville in 1855. He became with his uncle a member of one of the leading mercantile establishments of that section.
