Born as Ephraim Elmer Ellsworth in Malta, New York, Ellsworth grew up in Mechanicville, New York, and later moved to New York City. In 1854, he moved to Rockford, Illinois, where he worked for a patent agency. In 1859, he became engaged to Carrie Spafford, the daughter of a local industrialist and city leader. The first unit of United States Zouave Cadets was organized by Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth in Chicago in the late 1850s. The Zouaves trained in the French military style and Ellsworth's Cadets traveled through the eastern United States competing in drill competitions, leading to the "Zouave Craze" and the creation of Zouave militias throughout the United States.
