Daughter of Judge David Pickle and Birdie Givens Pickle, Mayhall was a teacher, writer, wife of Temple Bland Mayhall, and mother. She taught anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin and history at Austin High School. Mayhall wrote her dissertation and two books on Indians of Texas, collaborated on a seventh grade Texas history textbook, and contributed several articles to various publications. Andrew W. George was born into slavery, possibly in South Carolina, around 1852. In New Orleans he was sold to the George family of Elgin, Texas about 1858. After the Civil War, George worked as a janitor in the Travis County Courthouse; as a cook and domestic servant for judge Alexander Watkins Terrell; and as a camp cook for the state and U.S. geological surveys (1880s). Alexander Watkins Terrell was born November 3, 1827 in Patrick County, Virginia. In 1832 his family moved to Cooper County, Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he read law at Booneville, and was admitted to the Missouri bar in 1849. His first law practice was in St. Joseph. After moving to Austin, Texas (1852), he became judge of the Second Judicial District (1857-1862).
