Alfred L. Burt was born in Listowel, Ontario, Canada, on November 28, 1888. He was graduated from the University of Toronto in 1910 and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, England. From 1913 to 1930 he was professor of history at the University of Alberta, Canada. From 1930 to his retirement he was professor of history at the University of Minnesota.
