Joshua W. Mewborn papers, 9 Aug 1862, 1863, 17 Aug 1909, undated.

Papers consist of two letters written by Joshua Mewborn to his father, a handwritten memoir written in 1909, and two news clippings of Mewborn's obituaries. In the August 1862 letter, Mewborn describes a battle at Corinth, Mississippi; a typed transcript is included. Mewborn's memoir gives an eye witness account of campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia from 1862 until July 1864. He describes his service in the Confederate Army and his admiration for Confederate General Joseph E. Johnson. Mewborn describes his medical care after being wounded in July 1864, his journey home to recover, and his return to service before the end of the war.

Joshua W. Mewborn was born on 25 October 1843 near Dancyville, Tennessee. His two elder brothers enlisted in "The Macon Greys" in April 1861 in service of the Confederacy. After his eighteenth birthday, Mewborn enlisted in Company K of the 38th Tennessee Regiment on 4 March 1862. He served under Generals Beauregard and Bragg during their campaigns against General Buell.
