Joshua W. Mewborn was born on 25 October 1843 near Dancyville, Tennessee. His two elder brothers enlisted in "The Macon Greys" in April 1861 in service of the Confederacy. After his eighteenth birthday, Mewborn enlisted in Company K of the 38th Tennessee Regiment on 4 March 1862. He served under Generals Beauregard and Bragg during their campaigns against General Buell. After a year with the 38th Tennessee, he was able to transfer to Company B, 13th Tennessee Infantry Regiment to serve with his two elder brothers. Mewborn was wounded in the left thigh on 22 July 1864 during an assault on General Sherman's breastworks between Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia. After recovering, he rejoined his unit and served until he was paroled on 1 May 1865. Mewborn became first a farmer, then built and operated a mill and public gin. Later he became engaged in the mercantile business and was an investor in real estate. He married twice and had six children. Joshua W. Mewborn died in February 1930.
