William Lewis Stanton scrapbook, ca. 1913-1918.

Scrapbook containing photographs, programs, ticket stubs, receipts, a poster, and maps. The photographs include football games and other events on the University of Michigan campus, as well as group shots of the Kappa Beta Psi fraternity, and students from the Civil Engineering Department. Also included are several photographs from Stanton's service during World War I. These photos include men from Stanton's unit, battlefields, and the ruins of towns. The three maps included with the scrapbook are battlefield maps. Areas included on these maps are Montfaucon and Arocourt (Verdun 6). The third map is the "Final Situation Map," 1st U.S. Army Disposition, dated November 11, 1918.

William Lewis Stanton was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 17, 1894. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1916 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree. Stanton entered military service on July 10, 1917 as a private in the 63rd infantry before being transferred to the 4th U.S. Engineers, and ultumately the 304th Engineers where he achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and served in the Meuse-Argonne offense. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
