William Lewis Stanton was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 17, 1894. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1916 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree. Stanton entered military service on July 10, 1917 as a private in the 63rd infantry before being transferred to the 4th U.S. Engineers, and ultumately the 304th Engineers where he achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and served in the Meuse-Argonne offense. He was discharged from the service in 1919. During the 1919/1920 academic year, Stanton returned to the University of Michigan as an instructor in Descriptive Geometry and Drawing.
