The collection contains material from his teaching and professional career; research; service on University committees and the Faculty Senate; financial records of the psychology department; students; coaching; foreign travels; coaching and athletic career; travels; and memoirs "Reminiscing." There is considerable material from his family, including his transcripts of his grandfather's diaries. Specific topics of interest include the Faculty Self Study, 1964-1965 (Finger report); his World War II diary, 1939-1941, containing news broadcast about the war in Europe interspersed with an account of his life as a graduate assistant at Brown; his retirement diary, 1984-1989 chronicling his "altered life pattern" interspersed with national and University of Virginia news; scrapbooks on the University of Virginia wrestling team; There are also reel to reel tapes, including two of abnormal psychology lectures.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
