Overton family papers [manuscript], 1781-1936, n.d.

The collection contains papers of the family, especially business and legal papers of Colonel John Overton; papers of the estate of James Overton; correspondence of Mrs. William Overton; and business papers and correspondence of William G. Overton. The papers also contain some correspondence and papers of William Overton of Poindexter, Va.; diaries of General L.P. Graham, of Washington, D.C.; and some correspondence of Nannie B. Giles of Richmond, Va.; topographic maps and blueprints of projects for the C & O and Atlantic Coast Railroad; family photographs and miscellaneous items. Topics include the Albemarle Agricultural Society; slaves owned by the family; the Lynchburg "Jeffersonian Republican"; and St. Paul's Church, Richmond, Va. (1898 parish register). Correspondents include William B. Giles and John B. Minor.

On 31 August 1868 the Covington and Ohio Railroad Company and the Virginia Central Railroad Company merged to form the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company. In 1870 the Blue Ridge Railroad was added to the company. After defaulting, the company was reorganized in 1878 as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. The road ran from Ft.
