Papers of the Gary family [manuscript] 1789, 1852-1973.

The collection consists almost entirely of family correspondence. Topics discussed include the preparations for an 1842 camp meeting, the 1857 Texas drought, anti Sam Houston sentiments in the 1857 Texas elections, the decimation of C.S.A. troops in Texas by yellow fever, gold mining in Virginia in 1931, the Female Collegiate Institute in Buckingham County, family genealogy, Pres. Eisenhower's laying of the cornerstone for a capital extension, a 1967 child's poem on the U.S. flag and a World War II letter from the South Pacific. Bible records, 1789-1934, of the Gary family are also included. The donor has provided notes and comments on most of the items.
